POLVO - Shapes LP
The continuing evolution of North Carolina's Polvo finally hit its logical endpoint with 1997's SHAPES. With prog, punk, and pronounced Eastern influences all making their voices heard throughout the band's career, the appropriately titled SHAPES twisted into all kinds of musical permutations. Both "The Fighting Kites" and "The Golden Ladder" made explicit their interest in exotic Asian sounds, while "Rock Post Rock" is (despite its title) a reasonably straightforward fuzzy pop song, and "Downtown Dedication" twists hazy '70s psychedelia into modern poses. Tellingly, the band would splinter off after SHAPES, as members went on to explore their various musical curiosities.
